Tomatoes recalled in 14 states over Salmonella concern

Consumers who have purchased these items should avoid consuming them and either return them to the store for a full refund or dispose of them properly.

UNITED STATES, — Vine ripe tomatoes sold in 14 states were recalled Friday due to possible Salmonella contamination. 

Ray & Mascari Inc., based in Indianapolis, Indiana, has issued a recall for their “4 Count Vine Ripe Tomatoes” packaged in clam shell containers weighing 20 oz. (1 lb. 4 oz) 567g.” They are advising the public against consuming these tomatoes.

The tomatoes were distributed by Gordon Food Service Stores across multiple states, including Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, Mississippi, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, and Wisconsin.

The 4-count plastic clam shells have a VINE RIPE TOMATOES label containing a Packed by Ray & Mascari Inc., Indianapolis, IN 46204.


No illnesses were reported, but the recall was issued not too long after Hanshaw & Capling Farms of Immokalee, Florida, recalled some of their tomatoes and contacted Ray & Mascari Inc. of a similar issue. 

Tomatoes in that recall were sold in Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina between April 23 and April 28. No illnesses were reported in the recall. 

Hanshaw & Capling Farms tomatoes were sold in various forms, including 25lbs boxes, 18lbs boxes and 3-count trays. 


Consumers who have purchased these products are urged to not eat them and return them to the place of purchase for a full refund or just discard the product.

Salmonella can cause symptoms that begin six hours to six days after ingesting the bacteria and include diarrhea, fever and stomach cramps. Most people recover without treatment within a week, but young children, people older than 65 and those with weakened immune systems can become seriously ill.
