BBB warns Oklahomans of REAL ID scams as deadline approaches

OKLAHOMA CITY (KFOR) There are only a few days left to get a REAL ID and the Better Business Bureau (BBB) is warning you to watch out for scams.

Starting May 7, you’ll need a REAL ID to fly domestically and to enter federal facilities. A REAL ID can only be obtained in person at your local DMV or license office.

These scams claim you can get one online, which is false.

“It’s so easy to just quickly click a link without thinking about it and then that’s where the trouble begins,” said Casey Farmer, vice president of marketing, BBB Serving Central Oklahoma.

Farmer says some Oklahomans have reported getting these scams through phone calls, text messages and emails.

These messages appear to come from the Department of Motor Vehicles and typically urge recipients to purchase their REAL ID before the deadline.

“The warning is failure to do so will prevent them from traveling, from driving their vehicle, from paying a hefty fine,” said Farmer.

The BBB says these messages often use scare tactics to try and trick people into sharing personal information.

“Legitimate government agencies are not going to initiate contact via phone calls or text messages or emails requesting immediate action and that’s where we urge consumers to take a step back and think before sharing any personal information, before clicking links, which can end in, you know, a phishing scam for their personal information getting stolen,” said Farmer.

Fraudulent websites can look convincing, but if a site starts asking for your information that should raise red flags.

“If you need to get your REAL ID, you can find a lot of that information online. The scam is, though, putting your personal information online, not visiting a DMV here in Oklahoma to finish that request to finish your REAL ID because you can’t just get a REAL ID by going to a website,” said Farmer.

The BBB says to always trust your gut and if it feels off, it probably is. You should always block and report any scams.
