Staff report

A 21-year-old Florida Gators football cornerback, Dijon Jaquis Johnson, was arrested in Tampa on May 2. The charges against him include possessing synthetic marijuana, having a firearm during a felony, possessing under 20 grams of marijuana, and resisting arrest without violence.

The incident occurred around 11:14 p.m. on May 2 when a Tampa Police officer stopped a gray Dodge Challenger for not stopping properly at an intersection. Johnson was behind the wheel, though the report mentions other passengers without specifying their number.

According to the officer, Johnson became argumentative right away and refused repeated requests to exit the vehicle. Eventually, the officer had to remove and detain him.

A search of the vehicle was conducted, based on the probable cause of a strong odor of burned marijuana, and a backpack was found that reportedly contained Johnson’s passport, along with 8 grams of synthetic marijuana, an unreported quantity of marijuana, and a Glock 19, loaded with 17 rounds in the magazine but no rounds in the chamber.

Johnson has three traffic citations in Alachua County but no other local criminal history. He was released after posting $8,500 bail.

Johnson was a consensus four-star recruit coming out of Wharton High School in Tampa. He appeared in all 12 games of the 2023 season, primarily on special teams, and played at defensive back in all 13 games of the 2024 season, with five starts.

Articles about arrests are based on reports from law enforcement agencies. The charges listed are taken from the arrest report and/or court records and are only accusations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
