Shoppers have been urged to bin a popular beef lasagne ready-meal after some packs were discovered to contain a lobster version of the dish, posing a possible allergy threat.

Health chiefs last night issued an urgent recall of La Famiglia Rana Slow-Cooked Braised Beef Lasagne, citing ‘a packing error’ as the cause of the issue.

The Food Standards Agency warned that ‘some packs may contain Prawn & Lobster Lasagne, that contains crustaceans, (prawns and lobster), which are not mentioned on the label’.

This means the product is a possible health risk for anyone with an allergy to crustaceans.

The affected product is La Famiglia Rana Slow-Cooked Braised Beef Lasagne, in the pack size of 700g.

Shoppers should look for batch code L0B510816, with a use by date listed as 17 June 2025.

The alert claims Giovanni Rana Ltd ‘is recalling the above product from customers’ and the company added: ‘If you have bought the above product and have an allergy to crustaceans, do not eat it.

‘Instead return it to the store from where it was bought for a full refund, even without a receipt.’

In the UK, shellfish allergies are estimated to affect up to three per cent of the adult population—approximately 1.5million people.

Sufferers can often tolerate specific types of shellfish, such as mollusks—oysters, mussels, etc—while being allergic to crustaceans such as shrimp, lobster and crab.

Reactions can range in severity from mild to life-threatening, and the risk of a severe reaction, known as anaphylaxis, is the major concern.

Shellfish allergy symptoms are much like other allergic reactions, with itching, hives, tingling or swelling of the lips, tongue or throat being among the most common.

Chest tightness, wheezing, coughing, shortness of breath and difficulty breathing can be seen, alongside stomach issues: nausea, indigestion, vomiting or diarrhea.

Anaphylaxis the most severe and potentially life-threatening type of allergic reaction that can occur within minutes of exposure to a trigger, such as shellfish.

Symptoms may include swelling of the face or throat, difficulty breathing, a rapid drop in blood pressure, dizziness, and loss of consciousness.

Without prompt treatment, anaphylaxis can be fatal.

The most effective treatment is an injection of adrenaline, and sufferers of severe allergies are encouraged to carry an auto-injector, such as an EpiPen.

Anyone experiencing anaphylaxis should seek emergency medical attention immediately, even if symptoms seem to improve after the injection.

Avoiding known allergens is crucial for those at risk, and carrying emergency medication at all times is often advised.

Alongside recalling their lasagne product, Giovanni Rana is contacting allergy support organisations, so they can inform their members about the recall.
