The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office clarified that the substantial police activity on Friday was due to a particular incident. They apprehended a man who was experiencing a mental health crisis.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — According to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office, officers seized an AR-15, a shotgun, and a handgun from an individual in a mental health emergency in Downtown Jacksonville. This situation accounted for the significant police presence noticed by many in the vicinity.

JSO stated they received numerous 911 calls about an armed individual allegedly threatening neighbors in an apartment complex. Officers arrived on the scene, approached the vehicle with caution, and successfully detained the man. The firearms were secured during the intervention.

“We don’t know what could have happened, but this was a very dangerous and potentially deadly situation for many people,” JSO said in a statement.

Officers determined the man was undergoing a mental health crisis, and he is now receiving treatment while in custody, JSO said.

He is facing aggravated assault charges.
