The relatives of a woman struck by a van while taking a walk with her dog in Adelaide are seeking explanations, raising concerns about whether the elderly motorist involved should have been driving.

The victim’s distraught husband has been at his wife’s bedside at the Royal Adelaide hospital for most of today.

He told 9News they were walking the family dog yesterday morning, when they were hit by a van.

The couple had a green light to cross Montacute Road.

Footage from a nearby traffic camera appears to show the 91-year-old driver turning into their path.

The woman’s husband told 9News he put his arms up to try and get the driver’s attention.

The driver didn’t see him, knocking him over and then hitting his wife.

She was rushed to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

She was in emergency surgery for several hours yesterday and has now been transferred to the intensive care unit.

The 48-year-old has several head injuries and a number of broken bones.

Meanwhile, the elderly driver, a 91-year-old man from Rostrevor, has been reported for dangerous driving and had his licence taken away.

The husband and his teenage son say he shouldn’t have been behind the wheel, and the tragic accident could have been avoided.

The woman tonight remains in a critical but stable condition.

The 91-year-old will be summoned to appear in court at a later date.
