'SNL’ Weekend Update takes shots at the new Pope, AI Trump, and movie tariffs

The May 10 episode of Saturday Night Live quickly jumped into the week’s most sensational headlines, with Weekend Update hosts Colin Jost and Michael Che delivering their signature mix of humor, sharp remarks, and a bit of delightful chaos.

First on their list? The Vatican. The spotlight is on Chicago-born Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost for becoming the new pope. While many are intrigued by his American background, Jost and Che found another angle to explore.

“It’s amusing that conservatives are already criticizing this pope for being too progressive,” Jost quipped. “I mean, how progressive can a 69-year-old man from Chicago really be? It’s not like he walked out and introduced himself as, ‘Hey, I’m Pope Leo the 14th, he/him.’”

That wasn’t the only religious satire of the night. Che brought up the AI-generated image of Donald Trump dressed as the pope and didn’t hold back. “I just find it hard to believe that anyone in the Catholic Church would be into something so juvenile,” he deadpanned—earning a massive laugh from the audience and leaving Jost briefly stunned into silence.

But don’t worry, Che was just getting started. He moved on to Trump’s head-scratching new idea to slap a 100% tariff on foreign-made films—an announcement that’s already sending shockwaves through Hollywood. Che? Totally unfazed. “No problem for me because all the movies I watched were filmed in a Florida condo on a leather couch.”

And yes, the Trump jokes kept rolling. Referencing Trump’s bizarre proposal to reopen Alcatraz because it “represents something horrible and beautiful and strong and miserable and weak,” Che tossed out one of the night’s sharpest punchlines: those were also Trump’s “nicknames for his five children.”

Then came Marcello Hernández, back in character as The Movie Guy, delivering his own rundown of current box office hits like Sinners and A Minecraft Movie. While teasing the next installment in the dinosaur franchise, Jurassic World Rebirth, he somehow managed to mangle Scarlett Johansson’s name into “Carley Sohanson.”

Cue Colin Jost, casually reminding everyone that Johansson happens to be his wife. Hernández didn’t miss a beat: “And my wife is Rihanna!” The audience loved it. Maybe too much. “I don’t like how hard you guys are laughing,” Jost joked.

It was classic Weekend Update mayhem—sharp, weird, just a little chaotic, and exactly what we tuned in for.
