FISHER, Ill. (WCIA) — Public libraries offer access to resources such as books, computers, and more. For this reason, a village in Champaign County is taking significant steps to establish one for the first time.

Travis Wilson, who is leading the effort, along with fellow community members, is working towards getting the Village of Fisher its own public library. Earlier this week, Wilson and his team presented this proposal to the village board.

Currently, they are in the early stages and hope for a smooth process. A volunteer mentioned that this isn’t their first attempt at securing a public library for the village.

“Fisher is one of the only small towns in the area that doesn’t have their own library,” said volunteer Kim Clemmons. “About 25 years ago, there was a push to try to get one at that point, and the tax referendum failed at that time. We definitely could use a library here in our town.”

She said people in town have to get a library card from surrounding communities if they’re interested in checking out a book. Clemmons said right now, they’re still getting everything figured out and waiting for their second meeting.
