Baymeadows Road crash kills father, son on Jacksonville's Southside

JSO Cmdr. Dan Shelton said the two were crossing the road Friday night when a car hit them.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Tragedy struck when a father and his toddler were killed after being struck by a vehicle while walking across Baymeadows Road on Friday night, according to JSO investigators.

JSO Cmdr. Dan Shelton said the crash happened around 8:30 p.m. Friday in the 4000 block of Baymeadows Road.

JSO representative Shelton mentioned that the father, believed to be in his mid to late-30s, was carrying his one to two-year-old son as they attempted to cross Baymeadows Road and were hit by an eastbound Honda Civic.

JFRD responded, but tragically, both father and son were pronounced dead at the scene, Shelton said.

“Our thoughts and prayers are extended to the victims and their families,” Shelton expressed on behalf of JSO and Sheriff T.K. Waters.

The driver of the car was taken to the hospital as a precaution, Shelton said. He’s cooperating with investigators. Shelton said the driver had no signs of impairment.

Baymeadows Road will be shut down in both directions as investigators learn more about the circumstances leading to the crash.
