But after it ended, he shied away from the spotlight and took a long break from acting.
He previously reflected on his decision to step back from the industry to E!, explaining during a 2002 interview, ‘Frankly, when the show wrapped up, I was kind of thankful.
‘I was like, “OK, phew, going into high school, new chapter, that’s done. We’re going to see what this is going to be like.”
‘And that’s when they were like, “Hey, do you want to do [the Lizzie McGuire Movie]?”‘
He added that he had just made it onto the varsity water polo team at his school, but quit the sport to go film the movie.
‘It was that decision, actually, that got me to stop acting completely. I was pretty down at that time,’ he continued.
‘I really felt like I desired to be a team player in the things that I do. And I was able to enact that in The Lizzie McGuire Movie, but for some reason, not being there for my water polo team weighed very heavily on my part. And so after the movie, it was like, “OK, this is it, this is what I am doing.”‘
However, he returned to acting in 2014, after nearly a decade hiatus, when he started to appear in a slew of short films and make guest appearances in some popular shows.
