Former South Dakota deputy sheriff charged with rape after standoff

SIOUX FALLS S.D. (KELO) — A former deputy sheriff was arrested for allegedly raping a juvenile in western Sioux Falls Friday, police said.

According to Sioux Falls Police Department spokesman Sam Clemens, police were called to a home located in the 1200 block of Kevin Circle near Dunham Parkin Sioux Falls after the juvenile told police a man raped them.

Police learned the man had returned to the home Sunday and believed he may have a weapon. SWAT was called to the home, where police detained the suspect after a standoff. affiliate KELO was at the scene on Sunday night.

The suspect was identified as Kipp Daniel Stearns, 35, of Sioux Falls. Stearns is charged with aggravated incest and rape.

According to state records, Stearns is a former Turner County sheriff deputy who lost his law enforcement certification in March 2024.
