PIATT COUNTY, Ill. (WCIA) — A Monticello man has pleaded guilty to a fatal hit and run that happened last year.

On November 10th, Piatt County deputies were called to the intersection of County Roads 1900 North and 1300 East following reports of a woman being struck by a vehicle. The victim, 39-year-old Havilah Giannetta, was found critically injured and later passed away at Carle Hospital in Urbana.

In February, WCIA announced the arrest of 28-year-old Dustin Wiegel. He was charged with leaving the scene of an accident that resulted in death, which is categorized as a Class 1 felony.

On Monday, May 19th, Wiegel accepted a plea agreement. Online records reveal that he pleaded guilty and received an eight-year sentence in the Illinois Department of Corrections. He will be credited for 83 days already spent in jail and is required to serve at least half of his sentence.

Wiegel’s guilty plea comes after he originally pleaded not guilty in March. He also previously requested a trial by jury.
