Witnesses told deputies that a man identified as Charles Kirkman, 63, was screaming racial slurs and shooting his firearm into the air Sunday night.

YULEE, Fla. — A man allegedly involved in an extensive standoff with law enforcement was taken into custody on charges of aggravated assault and firing a weapon, as reported by the Nassau County Sheriff’s Office.

The sheriff’s office said deputies responded to a call reporting shots fired on Branch Creek Drive in Yulee around 7:45 p.m. Sunday.

Witnesses told deputies that a man identified as Charles Kirkman III, 63, was screaming racial slurs and shooting his firearm into the air.

The sheriff’s office mentioned that deputies set up a perimeter around Kirkman’s home, and he attempted to drive away. When deputies moved toward him, he retreated inside.

Officers on the scene made several attempts to communicate with Kirkman over a period of hours. According to the sheriff’s office, Kirkman confirmed that he was alone in the residence.

Just over six hours later, around 2:19 a.m., investigators gained entry to the residence, using “less lethal force,” the sheriff’s office said.

Kirkman was arrested and taken to the hospital for minor injuries. No other injuries were reported.

Kirkman is being held at the Nassau County Jail and Detention Facility on a $50,000 bond.
