Texas custodian Marilyn Hampton breaks down in tears as new elementary school is named in her honor

A Texas school custodian broke down in tears after discovering that a new elementary school would carry her name, nearly four decades after she began working for the district.

Marilyn Hampton, who retired this year, received the surprise during a Wednesday meeting of the Aubrey Independent School District board of trustees. Officials announced that “Elementary School Number Five” will open next year as Marilyn Hampton Elementary School.

Superintendent Shannon Saylor had asked Hampton to place a red carpet in front of the speaker’s podium—an assignment that echoed the many duties she performed as a district custodian.

“She may not have the official title of an educator, but she was in every meaningful sense a teacher and an educator at heart,” Saylor said, according to footage shared by the school on social media.

As Hampton looked down at the carpet, she noticed that it displayed the words “Marilyn Hampton Elementary School.”

“You’re too good. I wasn’t expecting this. Thank y’all. I can’t speak,” Hampton said before bursting into tears and covering her face with her hands.

“Oh my goodness. Oh God. You all are the best,” she added.

Board members quickly gathered around Hampton to hug her as she was shown a rendering of the school named in her honor.

“I didn’t bring my phone,” Hampton said.

“That’s OK, it’ll be everywhere,” Saylor replied with a joke.

The new school in Aubrey, Texas, is expected to open next August.

Hampton later said the tribute had left her deeply emotional.

“I still can’t believe it. I haven’t stopped crying. My heart is full,” she told WTOC on Friday.

One of eight children, Hampton was the only sibling in her family to finish high school.

For years, she said, she felt unsuccessful because she had not attended college. Over time, however, Hampton came to understand that her life had taken a different—and meaningful—course.

“I just thought, ‘You know, Marilyn? God put you where you are supposed to be.’ And I’m very happy with the way things turned out,” she said.

Saylor said Hampton’s contribution extended well beyond maintaining the district’s buildings. She purchased and delivered school supplies and helped students prepare for tests.

“She is truly Aubrey ISD,” Saylor told the outlet, describing Hampton’s legacy as one defined by kindness, dedication and perseverance.

Hampton now spends time at the district’s Early Bird Learning Center, where she sits in a rocking chair while feeding a young girl named Claire.

“She’s a sweetheart. She’s got pretty eyes,” Hampton said.

The district gave Hampton a T-shirt bearing the new school’s name to mark the announcement.

“Can you believe it? I can’t. I cannot. All I can say is God is good,” she said.
