In Wisconsin, a 41-year-old man allegedly drove at high speed, hitting and killing a 90-year-old pedestrian before refusing to stop, leading his passenger to jump from the moving vehicle to report the incident. Raul Herrera was arrested last week and faces a charge of felony hit-and-run resulting in death, court records indicate.

Authorities identified the victim as Roberto Deleon.

A criminal complaint acquired by Law&Crime details that Milwaukee Police Department officers responded around 9:41 p.m. on May 10, 2025, to the 1000 block of South 35th Street. This came after multiple 911 calls reported a pedestrian being struck by a speeding vehicle.

One of the callers allegedly told the dispatcher that “the pedestrian’s head was ‘cracked open.”” That caller also said the driver had already fled the scene.

A second caller phoned 911 a short while later and allegedly said “she was in the striking auto” when it hit the pedestrian, and claimed that “the driver of the striking auto would not stop so she had to jump out of the striking auto.”

When police arrived at the scene, emergency medical personnel with the Milwaukee Fire Department were already attempting to perform lifesaving measures on the Deleon. Unfortunately, their efforts were unsuccessful and he was pronounced dead on the scene.

An autopsy determined that Deleon’s cause of death was blunt force injuries that were consistent with being struck by a vehicle, including head lacerations, brain bleeding, and multiple fractured ribs.

The witness who was allegedly in the car with Herrera during the crash confirmed via photo lineup that he was driving.

The witness stated that prior to the crash, she had been at home with the defendant and another male she only knew as “Chi Longo.” She said the three of them went to a Mexican restaurant with Herrera driving a friend’s red 2002 Ford Mustang, a convertible with a tan top, before heading to a local bar where they had dinner and “a few drinks.” When they left at about 8:45 p.m., she said Herrera continued to drive and she sat in the passenger seat.

The trio stopped at a deli where they purchased vodka and beer before heading to a south-side auto body shop.

“NH stated that while they were driving, the Defendant was driving ‘very fast’ and in a reckless manner. When [the witness] brought up the way the Defendant was driving, he said ‘shut up b—,’” the complaint says. “[The witness] stated that she picked up her phone and while looking at her phone she heard the Defendant yell ‘OH S—!’ and then something hit the windshield of the car. [The witness] stated that she knew the Defendant had hit a person.”

The witness told Herrera to “stop because he hit a person,” but he refused and “appeared to not have any intention of stopping,” police wrote.

She was yelling for Herrera to let her down and when he finally slowed down, “she jumped out of the vehicle while it was moving.” After leaping from the vehicle, the witness said Herrera “continued to drive off and did not stop.”

Based on information from the witness, investigators located Herrera and the red Mustang. The car had “a huge hole in the driver’s side portion of the windshield,” and an officer allegedly saw Herrera drop an empty can of beer on the ground while walking away from the vehicle.

Inside the vehicle, police found broken glass with what appeared to be human hair on it, per the complaint. Police said the other passenger in the car also confirmed to investigators that Herrera was driving at the time of the crash, the complaint says.

Herrera also allegedly confessed to driving the car after drinking and smoking weed. He is being held in the Milwaukee County Jail on $120,000 bond, records show.
