A 35-year-old man has admitted to strangling a 75-year-old Indiana woman whose body was found in the basement of her home.
Jamerus Parkman pleaded guilty to murder in the death of Susan Haynie, along with burglary, according to Vanderburgh Superior Court records reviewed by Law&Crime. He is scheduled to be sentenced on Dec. 2.
The Evansville Police Department said officers were dispatched at about 5 p.m. on Aug. 27, 2025, to a home in the 3300 block of East Gum Street. Evansville is located in southern Indiana, near the state’s border with Kentucky.
Haynie lived at the residence, where officers discovered her dead in the basement. Police announced the next day that they had identified a “person of interest” in the investigation. That person was later identified as Parkman.
Investigators believe Parkman entered the home through an unlocked door before killing Haynie, area CBS and Fox affiliate WEVV reported. His criminal history includes convictions for burglary, robbery and attempted rape stemming from a crime spree between 2008 and 2010.

Parkman was released on parole in February 2025 after serving 13 years of a 35-year sentence, according to the outlet. His release came just months before Haynie’s death.
Police arrested Parkman after investigators said evidence connected him to the killing. Among the evidence was a tablet that indicated he had been in Haynie’s yard around the time of her death. He initially pleaded not guilty but changed his plea on Friday, court records show.
Haynie was “a lifetime resident of Evansville,” according to her obituary. She worked as a local realtor and was described as someone who drew on her deep community roots and professional experience to provide clients with personalized, compassionate service.
“Susan will be remembered not only as a dedicated real estate professional but also as a cherished friend whose generosity and spirit touched everyone who knew her,” the obituary states. “Susan had a special gift and commitment to turn every opportunity to entertain into an unforgettable experience. Time and again, she stepped in to make her friends’ lives much more joyful.”
