STATESBORO, Ga. () — The Calvary Day baseball team clinched the 2024-2025 GHSA Private State Baseball Championship by sweeping Savannah Christian at J.I. Clements Stadium. This victory marks their third championship title in the sport, with previous wins in 2004 and 2006.

FIRST GAME RECAP

Savannah Christian struck first in the opening frame. Cardin Patrick hit an RBI single to give the Raiders a 1-0 lead.

In the bottom portion of the inning, Calvary Day erupted with six runs. The pivotal moment came when Waylan Heidik hit a bases-clearing double, propelling the Cavaliers to a commanding 6-1 lead.

Calvary Day added two more runs in the bottom of the second. Brody Dawson’s 2-RBI double extended the Cavs lead to 8-1.

No further runs were scored until the bottom of the sixth inning, when Calvary Day added one final run in the first game due to a Savannah Christian error. The Cavaliers took a 9-1 lead after six innings, which concluded as the final score for Game 1.

SECOND GAME RECAP

Calvary Day started the second game with a run in the top of the first. Max Arnold scored on the passed ball, which ended up being ball four to Cutter Powell.

When Savannah Christian came to the plate in the first, they brought their bats with them. Patrick smacked a single to center to tie the game at 1. Later in the inning, Weston Hughes ripped a double and the Raiders took their first lead, 2-1.

Calvary Day would tie the game two innings later. Dalton Kelley scored on an RBI groundout from Powell. The game was at two after three innings.

The Raiders responded in the bottom half of the frame. With the infield drawn in, Hughes had his second hit of the night and second RBI. Savannah Christian led, 3-2, after three innings.

Calvary Day tied the game again in the top of the fifth. Quinn Johnson, who picked up the win in Game 1, singled up the middle to knot the game at 3.

Johnson came back to the plate in the top of the seventh with bases loaded with one out. He took the first pitch to left field. The ball was deep enough to score Heidik on a sacrifice fly, which was the go-ahead run. Calvary Day took a lead they would not relinquish as they won Game 2, 4-3, and completed the sweep.
