Liberal candidate and former assistant minister Tim Wilson appears to have won the Goldstein seat from current MP Zoe Goldstein; however, the possibility of a recount remains.
At the end of the first count, Wilson was ahead of the teal independent by just 128 votes â a 0.06 per cent margin on the two-candidate count.
The Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) will now conduct a full distribution of preferences, which could see that margin change.
The AEC will initiate a recount automatically if the margin between the two candidates is 100 votes or fewer. Candidates can also request a recount if the difference exceeds this limit.
Initially, Daniel declared victory on election night as the early vote count was strongly in her favor. However, as postal votes were counted, the tide turned, showing more than a 60-40 split in favor of Wilson, the Liberal candidate.
Wilson declared victory on May 7 after media outlets, including Nine, called Goldstein in his favour, and went on to consider â and then rule out â a tilt at the Liberal leadership.
However, a late surge in support for Goldstein saw the margin narrow significantly last week, down from more than 1400 to 128 when the first count finished today.
Daniel has consistently refused to concede the seat, which she won off Wilson at the 2022 election.
