Trump pitch for 'big, beautiful bill' fails to sway GOP holdouts

() President Donald Trump’s attempts to sway some Republicans in Congress to rally behind his big tax cuts bill have apparently failed.

Trump held a nearly two-hour meeting with Republican lawmakers on Capitol Hill, urging them to make sure the bill, also called the “big, beautiful bill,” gets passed by House Speaker Mike Johnson’s proposed Memorial Day deadline.

One topic that some holdouts on the bill have been concerned about is state and local tax deductions, or SALT. Republican New York Rep. Mike Lawler has been fighting for bigger deductions and has still not stood behind the bill. According to The Hill, Trump has reportedly told Lawler to drop his demands.

Mick Mulvaney, who was the White House chief of staff in Trump’s first term, joined ” Now” with Connell McShane on Tuesday and said the bill will eventually get passed despite Lawler’s objections.

“This is the Trump tax cuts, it’s not going down in flames,” Mulvaney said. “They’re going to get there, but it just might not be on schedule.”
