Medicaid cuts not the way to improve system: Rep. Bera

() Despite President Donald Trump’s demand to GOP lawmakers not to cut Medicaid when passing his “big, beautiful bill,” a new Congressional Budget Office analysis paints a different picture.

The CBO shows that the bill now proposes about $716 billion in cuts to Medicaid over the next 10 years, making it the largest cuts in the program’s history and would lead to some 7.6 million people being left without health insurance.

California Rep. Ami Bera, a Democrat, joined ” Now” on Wednesday to talk about the bill. He said the numbers coming from the CBO concerned him because of the number of people who would lose coverage.

Some holdouts from the Republican Party have said there are not enough cuts being made to the program, which has been preventing the bill from being passed. Bera said he would be more than willing to work with his Republican colleagues to find solutions and improve Medicaid’s efficiency, but large cuts are not the way to go.

“There’s a lot we could do there to get better, affordable health care,” Bera said. “This is not the way to go about doing it. It should be done in a bipartisan way.”
