The telling signs that Trump's fascination with Elon Musk is fading… but the onetime 'first buddy' is making it clear he's not ready to quit the White House bubble

Billionaire Elon Musk cannot quit Washington, D.C.

Despite signaling to the world he was ready to step back from politics, Musk stepped into the Oval Office quietly on Wednesday with the president to observe a dramatic showdown on an issue he cares about.

Musk watched with amusement as Trump asked his aides to dim the lights and play a video montage for South African President Cyril Ramaphosa featuring evidence of a ‘white genocide’ in his country – despite his insistence it is not happening.

It is an issue that Musk, who was born in South Africa, is extremely passionate about.

Trump could not resist giving Musk as shoutout, event though he knows that negative attention follows when they appear together.

‘Elon is from South Africa. I don’t want to get Elon involved. That’s all I have to do, get him into another thing,’ he chuckled lightly. ‘But Elon is from South Africa. This is what Elon wanted.’

Trump said that Elon was more focused on sending rockets to Mars.

‘I don’t want to talk to him about that, I don’t think it’s fair to him,’ he added.

Musk did not speak, but images of him staring intently at the South African president went viral as people speculated what he was really thinking.

Despite his efforts to distance himself, Musk cannot help using his visiting privileges with President Trump when he wants to.

Predictions that the friendship between the tempestuous billionaires would eventually blow up never materialized, as both have retained a genuine respect for each other people familiar with their relationship tell the Daily Mail.

When Trump first took office, the world watched as one of the richest men on the planet was ambling around the White House wearing a ‘tech support’ T-shirt with a MAGA hat.

At Trump’s cabinet meeting at the end of April, Musk put on a Gulf of America hat on top of his other hat, joking that he wore so many hats that ‘even my hat has a hat.’

‘Elon, I love the double hat, but he’s the only one can do that, and get away with it,’ Trump said, shaking his head.

Musk tried to achieve what every successful business CEO dreams of – enacting significant reforms in a wasteful and ineffective government.

But Musk was distracted, the business community fretted, as the left tried to punish him for cutting out funding for some of their favorite causes.

In recent weeks, however, Musk has been on a bit of a reboot, starting with a new profile on his X account reading ‘Kekius Maximus,’ suggesting that the ’emperor’ of the tech industry had returned.

‘He’s definitely going to be more heavy there,’ one source told the Daily Mail, referring to Musk’s businesses, adding that Tesla’s robotaxi would probably be his biggest focus in the future.

President Trump has noticeably turned his attention away from Musk, sending him fewer messages of support on his social media account in recent weeks.

Trump did not mention Musk in any of his Truth Social posts in April or May, according to a Politico analysis of his posts. That’s a steep decline from when he first took office and was constantly posting about DOGE and Musk’s accomplishments.

Musk’s posts on X also appear to be veering away from politics and more toward his projects.

Although Musk traveled with Trump to the Middle East, he was not pulling the same scene-stealing fascination from dignitaries or the press in the room.

When he returned, Musk spent the week in an unprecedented show of force in the business community, previewing his big plans for Tesla, Starlink, and Space X.

A bullish Musk spoke to CNBC’s David Faber at Tesla’s megafactory on Tuesday to speak about the future of the company and its new focus on autonomous robotaxis.

Musk detailed his plan to debut the robotaxi on the streets of Austin at the end of June beginning small and scaling up rapidly.

But he’s already thinking bigger than that, channeling a Jawa from Star Wars eagerly trying to sell the Skywalkers some droids.

‘I think humanoid robots will be the biggest product ever. The demand will be insatiable,’ he said about the company’s proposed ‘Optimus’ robot. ‘Everyone’s gonna want one, basically, who wouldn’t want their own personal C3PO or R2D2. Everyone’s going to want one.’

Musk also appeared via video link for an interview at the Qatar Economic Forum, wearing a sheepskin lined leather jacket to outline his plans for the future.

His supporters chattered on social media that he was channeling the forceful Batman villain Bane, ready to seize control of his companies again and propel them to new heights.

He shrugged off leftist Tesla owners who put stickers on their vehicles excusing their ownership of the one-time iconic electric car because they purchased it ‘before Elon was crazy.’

‘They’re also people buying it because Elon is crazy or however they view it,’ he said in reaction to the change.

Tesla, he insisted, was already bouncing back as the company’s stock has already risen by 60 percent since it hit historic lows in April.

Musk also broke news during the event that he was moving away from politics and political spending.

‘In terms of political spending, I’m going to do a lot less in the future,’ he said at the Qatar Economic Forum.

‘I think I’ve done enough,’ he added, sparking laughter in the audience.

A person familiar with Musk’s activities did not rule out the billionaire getting financially engaged in the congressional midterms, but suggested he was dialing it back.

‘Hard to say if he will do the same sort of thing like putting everything on pause to do rallies,’ the source said.

Musk also outlined his plans for the year ahead: Getting his massive Starship rocket to be reusable, developing Neuralink, and getting it to help restore sight to the blind, and reaching digital super intelligence in AI.

‘It’s a big year for sure,’ he added.

His world-famous DOGE effort was not mentioned, as Musk has made it clear he plans to step back from his endeavor to slash government spending, waste, fraud, and abuse to make government more efficient.

Musk has an enormous chip on his shoulder, as he blames the left and the legacy media for trying to destroy his companies because of his work at DOGE.

‘I mean, unfortunately, what I’ve learned is that legacy media propaganda is very effective at making people believe things that aren’t true,’ he said.

He has no regrets either, he assured the press, claiming he ‘did what needed to be done,’ and that the left’s response was a ‘violent antibody reaction.’

Musk believes they will pay for vandalizing his companies, customers of his vehicles, and issuing violent and personal threats against him.

‘What’s wrong with these people? Something needs to be done about them. A number of them will go to prison,’ he said confidently.

‘Those people will go to prison and the people that funded and organized them will also go to prison, don’t worry, we’re coming for you,’ he said, staring at the camera and pointing his figure.

The message was clear: Musk is back, and ready for revenge.
