Portrait of a Warrior: Andrew Bachelder

FORT WORTH, Texas — Marine veteran Andrew Bachelder, who has twice won the Warrior Open, relies on the sport of golf to keep pushing ahead in life. However, golf wasn’t always part of his journey.

In 2009, Bachelder survived a helicopter crash in midair while on duty in Afghanistan, resulting in severe injuries and numerous fractures. His wife, Debi, noted that upon his return home, he faced a multitude of struggles.

“He was gradually digging deeper into this hole,” Debi shared.

Bachelder admitted he attempted to take his own life.

“At one point, you’re like, I’m done with it,” Bachelder shared. “That’s the story of so many Veterans each day.”

Bachelder credits Debi for saving his life, “She’s my hero.”

Bachelder expresses his appreciation for the second chance he’s been given. Currently, he is dedicated to supporting other veterans facing difficulties through his nonprofit organization, Loops Fore Troops, which he helped establish. Their goal is to equip veterans with the necessary skills and knowledge for success by educating them to become caddies.

“It allows the veterans to get on the golf course and battle that 4 inches in between the ears, whether it’s hitting the golf ball or walking the player,” Bachelder said.
