ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (WFLA) — St. Petersburg continues to shine in its commitment to preserving parkland, earning national acclaim by ranking No. 1 in Florida and No. 14 nationally in the 2025 ParkScore index by the Trust for Public Land.

The ParkScore index evaluates the 100 largest U.S. cities based on park access, acreage, amenities, equity, and investment. St. Petersburg excelled particularly in equity and investment, achieving a score of 78 out of 100 in both categories.

“This accolade underscores our enduring commitment to creating an inclusive and dynamic parks system that champions wellness, sustainability, and community engagement,” said Mike Jefferis, Community Enrichment Administrator. “Our parks are more than mere green spaces; they are essential community centers offering everything from outdoor fitness options and family-friendly events to serene spots that connect people with nature.”

Notably, 75% of the city’s residents live within a 10-minute walk of a park, highlighting the city’s Parks and Recreation Department’s tireless efforts to create accessible, community-centered green spaces for the general public.

In this year’s rankings, St. Pete outperformed several cities traditionally known for their outdoor lifestyle, including Austin, San Diego, and Atlanta.

This recognition reflects the city’s deep investment in the health, happiness, and well-being of its residents, and solidifies St. Pete as a leader in parks and recreation.
