A car ploughed into a crowd of Liverpool fans during a parade celebrating their side’s Premier League title on Monday, and police arrested a 53-year-old local man shortly afterwards.
Merseyside police said a “number of pedestrians” were hit after the team’s open-top coach carried players and coaching staff through the city centre for a victory parade.
“We can confirm the man arrested is a 53-year-old white British man from the Liverpool area,” police said. “Extensive enquiries are ongoing to establish the circumstances leading up to the collision.”

Prime Minister Keir Starmer said on X that the scenes were “appalling” and he was being updated about the events.

A video on social media showed a car driving at speed into fans lining the street, at one point appearing to swerve away from the most densely crowded area.
Police surrounded the vehicle shortly afterwards, and other videos showed angry fans attempting to reach the driver.
Unverified social media video showed people lying in the road. Emergency services carried victims on stretchers to ambulances and debris scattered on the road.

A conscious individual on a stretcher was observed being placed into a St John’s ambulance, with the paramedic informing police that, in their opinion, the Royal Hospital could potentially be overcapacity.

A number of police officers could be seen lining the junction of Castle Street and Water Street and firefighters were also on scene.

Liverpool sealed the title last month with four games to spare and ended the season with a 10-point lead over second-placed Arsenal.
They lifted the trophy after their 1-1 draw with Crystal Palace at Anfield on Sunday.
During the celebrations earlier on Monday, the players and staff waved to the crowd from an open-top bus with the words ‘Ours. Again.’ emblazoned on the side, as red flares were lit along the route, running from Allerton Maze to Blundell Street.
