JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Many of you spent the long Memorial Day weekend soaking up the sun at the beach.
As vacationers enjoyed their time at Jacksonville Beach, lifeguards remained busy at their posts. They were primarily attending to reports of lost children, although there were also a few ocean rescue incidents.
Kayla Saunders and Taylor Wills join other beachgoers spending their Memorial Day at Jax Beach.
“Just having a good time meet up with friends and enjoy Memorial Day,” Saunders said.
“I mean it is a day to remember and respect the people that served our country. Thank you to everybody who still does,” Wills said.
While people enjoyed the weather and took a dip in the ocean. Lifeguards at Jacksonville Beach Ocean Rescue stayed on alert.
According to Capt. Rob Emahiser, this Memorial Day weekend they received lots of calls regarding lost children and they made a few ocean rescues.
“The crowd has been what we expected. It’s a big holiday weekend the first of the summer. Everything’s gone well. We’ve had plenty lifeguards out and plenty of my staff being able to respond to emergencies,” Emahiser said.
On this busy holiday, Emahiser said they have about 30 lifeguards on duty.
“We have a lot of preventive measures, advising people of ocean conditions and how close and how far from shore it’s safe to swim,” he said.
“It’s supposed to be a peaceful where everybody can get together. Pick up your trash. Be cool, calm, collective and have fun,” said Wills.
