FAIRMONT, W.Va. (WBOY) — Court documents reveal that Olympic gold medalist Mary Lou Retton faced arrest earlier this month in north-central West Virginia on charges of DUI.

On May 17, the West Virginia Magistrate Court records indicate that Mary Lou Retton, aged 57, was apprehended in Marion County for charges related to “driving under the influence of alcohol, controlled substances, or drugs.” She was granted a personal recognizance bond set at $1,500, which she posted successfully.

Retton, originally from Fairmont, West Virginia, is renowned for her groundbreaking achievements as a gymnast representing the United States, notably at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. During those games, she earned two perfect 10 scores just weeks after undergoing knee surgery.

She also made headlines in 2023 after being admitted to an Intensive Care Unit during her battle with pneumonia, prompting her daughter to set up a crowdfunding page to help pay for medical expenses. The fund raised $200,000 in a day, but received criticism from those who questioned her lack of insurance. She was released from the hospital a few weeks later.
