Killer sobs in court as daughters vow never to visit him in jail

Former American Idol singer Caleb Flynn broke down in court as his young daughters’ statements were read during his sentencing for murdering their mother.

Flynn, 40, flushed and struggled to hold back tears as an impact statement on behalf of Alyssa, 12, and Ava, ten, detailed the devastation caused by the killing of their mother, 37-year-old Ashley Flynn.

One daughter told the former church music pastor that he had “sinned big time” by cheating on Ashley with a much younger mistress. The other delivered a stark message, saying she had no plans to visit him in prison.

The statements were read before Flynn was sentenced on Monday to life in prison without the possibility of parole. He was convicted of shooting his wife inside the family home in Tipp City, Ohio, on February 16.

One of the hearing’s most emotional moments came when Ashley’s sister, Kayla Keyt, addressed Flynn and spoke about forgiveness despite the immense suffering left in the wake of the murder.

The proceedings exposed the devastating effect of Ashley’s death on her daughters, who effectively lost both parents in one night and are now being raised by Kayla and her husband, Matthew.

During his two-week-long trial last month, prosecutors said the former music pastor shot and killed his wife, 37-year-old Ashley Flynn, after having a 'years-long' affair.

Prosecutors alleged during Flynn’s two-week trial last month that the former music pastor shot and killed 37-year-old Ashley Flynn after carrying on a “years-long” affair.

Daughters confront Flynn over mother’s murder

“Dear Daddy. I don’t know where to start. How could you do such a thing?” Ava said in a statement read by her uncle.

“I loved you with all my heart. Mommy was the perfect person… what did she ever do to make you hate her so much?”

The girl also addressed her father’s affair with Alleigha Botner, now 24, who had been an intern at the Ohio church where Flynn worked as a music pastor.

“I cry and cry every day, and my heart breaks to see the people I love hurt,” Ava’s statement continued.

“I’ve seen videos and pictures of you on YouTube. It was your choice to go off with that dirty girl. It was your choice to leave that perfect girl, Ashley. It was your choice to leave your only two daughters. It was your choice to kill the only mother I’ve ever had.”

Ava then confronted Flynn directly about his relationship with Botner.

“How could you cheat on her and go to that awful girl Alleigha? I never liked her,” Ava said.

“You and Alleigha sinned big time but you still have a chance to tell God that you are sorry.”

Flynn’s other daughter, Alyssa, was similarly forceful in a letter read aloud by her grandmother, Jill Smith.

“Did you ever think about how much pain you would bring your own two daughters?” she asked.

Flynn sobs as daughters condemn him

“By the way, Ashley Flynn was the best thing that ever happened to you. You decided to throw it away for a girl who was half your age.”

Alyssa accused her father of being incapable of loving anyone but himself and called on him to finally accept responsibility for his actions.

‘You have already caused so much pain to your family and the world. The least you could do is tell everyone that you did it,’ her statement said.

Then came a final blow. ‘You made me feel like an idiot thinking I could trust you… And by the way, I don’t plan on coming to see you.’

Flynn sobbed in court while relatives delivered the girls’ words.

Kayla revealed how profoundly the daughters continue to struggle with their mother’s murder, recalling how one of the girls had recently been lying beside her and sobbing because she could not understand how her own father could have inflicted such devastation on their family.

She said the child then asked: ‘Why should I even believe in Jesus if he allowed this to happen to us?’

Flynn's 24-year-old mistress, Alleigha Botner, testified that they used hateful language to talk about Ashley.

Family describes daughters’ immense grief

Matthew Keyt, Kayla’s husband and brother-in-law to the late Ashley, described another agonizing ritual: the girls repeatedly visiting their mother’s grave.

‘Nearly every day we watch as Ashley’s daughters visit their mother’s gravesite,’ he told the court.

‘I watch them cry and talk to her. They often lie on the grass in front of her tombstone imagining that it will bring them a bit closer to their mom.’

Kayla also confronted Flynn over his refusal to confess, saying Ashley’s relatives had prayed for months that he would finally admit what he had done.

‘For months, our family prayed that you would confess and own up to all of your actions. But you didn’t,’ she said.

‘Instead, you chose to drag us through a nationally televised trial.’

She warned that Flynn’s daughters could one day search online and be confronted all over again by the horrific details surrounding their mother’s death.

‘Someday your daughters may search the internet about the worst night of their lives,’ Kayla said.

‘They lost their mother, their father, and pretty much everything they’ve owned in one night.’

Yet amid her grief and anger, Kayla also spoke directly about forgiveness, drawing on the Christian faith that had played such a significant role in the family’s lives.

The impact statements came after jurors had heard during Flynn’s two-week trial how prosecutors said the former pastor murdered his wife so he could pursue a new life with Botner.

Investigators testified that they found no evidence to suggest a home invasion had occurred, and prosecutors presented damning evidence that Flynn and his mistress regularly talked about wanting his wife dead.

Flynn maintains his innocence

Prosecutors said Flynn shot Ashley and then staged the scene to resemble a home invasion.

Flynn maintained that an intruder killed his wife while he slept nearby with their daughters, but investigators testified that they found no evidence supporting his account.

Botner became a central witness against her former lover.

She told jurors she met Flynn at Christian Life Center in Dayton in 2022 when she was a 20-year-old intern and he was in his mid-30s.

Their relationship later became romantic, and the jury was shown a series of messages exposing the hostility the pair expressed toward Ashley.

Botner broke down on the witness stand while acknowledging messages in which she and Flynn discussed wanting Ashley dead.

Before he learned his fate Monday, Flynn addressed the court himself.

‘I made vows to Ashley on our wedding day. I failed those vows,’ he said.

‘Although words don’t come close, I can not apologize enough. You heard awful, hurtful things I said. I am so incredibly sorry.’

But despite apologizing for his affair and the vicious things he had said, Flynn refused to accept responsibility for Ashley’s murder.

‘As I stand here before God, I am not lying when I say I did not kill my wife,’ he cried.

‘I will continue to fight for my innocence as long as the Lord allows me to, as I did not kill my wife.

Flynn sentenced to life without parole

He also addressed his daughters, telling them they were his ‘greatest joy in this life.’

‘I have so many thoughts and dreams of raising you and seeing you grow up to be mighty women of God, but unfortunately, I can’t. That’s why I’m sorry,’ Flynn said.

Judge Jeannine Pratt was unmoved.

She sentenced Flynn to life without parole and delivered a blistering assessment of the former pastor’s conduct.

‘Having heard the evidence in this case, the court is left with one clear and obvious conclusion: You pose a serious risk of harm to the public,’ Pratt said.

‘In fact, the highest risk. Your actions were abhorrent. The layers of deceit, manipulation, and cruelty you showed are impossible to fathom.’

The judge was particularly disturbed by Flynn’s invocation of religion.

‘And, frankly, sir, you used your faith. The court finds that deeply disturbing,’ she said.

‘Your marriage did not need to end the way it did.’
