Apple is planning to unveil a new app devoted to video games for the iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple TV at its Worldwide Developer Conference next week, as reported by Bloomberg. This app aims to serve as a central hub, allowing you to launch games that are already installed on your devices, and will include features like achievements and leaderboards.
According to Bloomberg, Apple intends to release its gaming app in conjunction with the next iOS version this September. The app is expected to replace Apple’s Game Center and will include editorial content, allowing access to games available on the App Store. A report from 9to5Mac from the previous year likened the app’s functionality to that of the Xbox app for iPhone.
A Mac version of the new app will let users “tap into games downloaded outside of the App Store,” Bloomberg says.
This development comes on the heels of news that Apple has acquired its first gaming studio. The company confirmed to Digital Trends that it purchased RAC7, the team responsible for Sneaky Sasquatch, one of the initial offerings on Apple’s Arcade games subscription service. RAC7 will maintain its independent operations and will not be integrated into any other Apple teams, as clarified by Digital Trends.
