Discord’s new currency pays users to interact with ads

Discord has introduced a new feature called “Discord Orbs,” which is currently being tested. This in-app currency can be used to purchase digital items, and users can accumulate Orbs by participating in the app’s promotional Quests. These Quests encourage users to engage with advertiser content, such as watching videos or streaming certain games to friends.

Orbs can be spent on standard items available in the Discord Shop, or exchanged for Orb-exclusive items like unique badges or temporary access to Discord Nitro, the app’s subscription service. Initially, Orbs are being made available to a limited number of users worldwide before a broader release. Those participating in the beta test will be notified accordingly.

Previously, any rewards given to users for completing Quests were provided by the brands or publishers themselves, often in the form of avatar decorations or in-game perks. This system remains an option, but now, as Discord representative Bradley Sheets explained to The Verge, offering Orbs provides brands with an additional way to incentivize users.
