Two families have been left homeless after their neighbouring houses were gutted by fire in Melbourne’s north-west overnight.

The fire ignited on Brosnan Crescent in Strathmore around 2am.

It is suspected that the blaze originated from two vehicles parked in the driveway of one of the homes, with a tyre burst raising the alarm to the residents.

A resident managed to capture a photo from inside their home, depicting flames reaching up to the windows.

All the occupants of both houses were able to get out, but the homes were badly damaged by the time firefighters could bring the blaze under control.

One resident said he had lived in the house for 26 years, since his childhood.
