LEALMAN, Fla. (WFLA) — A large fire destroyed a mobile home in Pinellas County that doubled as a cat rescue, housing at least 50 cats.

Fire rescue teams managed to evacuate all human occupants from Happy Tailz Cat Rescue; however, they tragically couldn’t save all the animals inside.

The fire was reported at around 5:30 p.m. on Friday, and the Happy Tailz Facebook page provided an update a few hours later.

The statement revealed that the rescue’s president, residing in the mobile home, came back from work to discover the residence ablaze. She swiftly contacted emergency services and attempted to save the cats that were trapped.

In addition to not being able to save some of the rescues, the president also lost some of her pets, though the rescue did not provide more details.

More than 50 animals were moved to Epic Emergency Pet Care, and those in stable condition were later moved to Harmony Vet Care, the workplace of the rescue’s president.

The post also said 8 cats were in critical condition as of around midnight on Saturday.

The rescue said they do not yet have a final count on the number of animals that died in the fire or from injuries they sustained.

They are asking for donations, as the mobile home not only housed the cats and the president, but also all of the supplies and food for the dozens of animals they care for.
