Jonnu Smith's agent reveals Dolphins star's 'first choice' in trade saga

Dolphins tight end Jonnu Smith isn’t interested in moving.

With ongoing discussions about Smith’s future, as he’s negotiating a new contract for the 2025 season, his agent, Drew Rosenhaus, addressed his status on a segment on Miami’s WSVN-7.

Rosenhaus expressed, “Representing my client, I can confirm that Jonnu wishes to remain in Miami,” as reported by the Miami Herald. “His priority is to stay here. Miami is his offseason home. Last year, he had an outstanding, record-setting season with the Dolphins, achieving the best performance ever for a Dolphins tight end. He set franchise records for receptions, receiving yards, and touchdowns by a tight end, and was the sole Pro Bowl representative for the team. His contribution to the team is immense. … He attended college at FIU, and playing for the Dolphins is his dream.”

“Hopefully, everything works out where he can stay in Miami.”

In addition to his time with the Dolphins, Smith has also played for Tennessee, New England, and Atlanta. At 29, his stint in Miami marked the pinnacle of his career, following a two-year, $8.4 million contract he signed last year.

Smith tallied career-best totals of 88 receptions on 111 targets for 884 yards and tied his personal high of eight touchdowns. He also led the Dolphins in catches and touchdown grabs, and ranked second in receiving yards.

Those numbers led to his first career Pro Bowl nod.

He is slated to earn a base salary of $3.49 million in 2025 and counts $4.64 million against the salary cap.

Last week on the “Pat McAfee Show,” NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport reported that Smith is chasing “a lot” of money coming off a big season.

However, the Dolphins may not have the funds to follow through with Smith.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Thursday the Dolphins engaged in trade discussions with the Steelers after Smith conveyed he wanted to re-work his contract.

Smith isn’t the only Dolphins standout on the trading block as Jalen Ramsey could also be on his way out of South Beach.
