A local EMS company preparing for hurricane season

AUGUSTA, Ga. () – Hurricane season is here, and after last year, local E-M-S companies are making sure they’re prepared.

This hurricane season is anticipated to be a busy one. Emergency Medical Services personnel at Central EMS are integrating lessons learned from Hurricane Helene, which caused damage to the region last year. They are hopeful that history won’t repeat itself. However, if another hurricane strikes, they will be more ready this time.

“Last time, the belief was it would never happen to us, but now look at us,” said Richard Johnson, Shift Commander at Central EMS. “We learned a lot from Helene. Although we had basic preparations before, I would say we’re significantly more prepared this time. The biggest focus is always on the community. Stay connected with your news outlets and local emergency services to receive warnings and act promptly.”

They’ve installed generators, camper-style trailers to ensure they get rest, a supply room stocked with nonperishables, and more.

“Having plenty of staff and a rotating schedule to bring in additional workers is crucial. We’ve also planned to have extra supplies, such as food and drinking water. One major issue last time was our fuel supply, but now we have established plans to maintain a fuel reserve on-site,” said Johnson.

They want to be as prepared as possible for any situation so they can continue to work and help the community. But they not only want to be ready, but they want you to stay alert, too.

“As the hurricane season approaches, I would advise everyone to pay attention, get yourself an emergency kit as well as a first aid kit, and start with the basics,” said Johnson.
