(KTLA) — Demonstrators and other agitators on an overpass pelted California Highway Patrol officers and their vehicles with rocks during anti-ICE protests in Los Angeles on Sunday.

The violence erupted after three days of immigration raids targeting several L.A. area businesses and gathering places for day laborers.

President Donald Trump ordered the National Guard to Los Angeles to protect federal agents and assist local authorities, a move that local leaders have criticized as inflaming the situation. California Gov. Gavin Newsom has called their deployment a “serious breach of state sovereignty” and a “complete overreaction.”

More protests erupted Sunday as troops dressed in tactical gear were seen stationed outside Metropolitan Detention Center downtown, where hundreds of demonstrators clashed with federal authorities previously. Tear gas was fired when some demonstrators moved close to the Guard troops.

California Attorney General Rob Bonta also said the state’s sovereignty was “trampled” by Trump when he ordered National Guard troops to the protests.

Bonta spoke Monday as he announced plans to sue the Trump administration.

He said the state will seek a court order declaring that Trump’s use of the Guard was unlawful and ask for a restraining order to halt the deployment.

Bonta said the suit would be filed later Monday.
