Alabama man indicted on more charges in 2002 Bristol homicide

BRISTOL, Tenn. (WJHL) — An Alabama man has been indicted on additional charges in connection with the murder of a Bristol man.

Christopher James Havrilla, 52, was indicted for the murder of 24-year-old Cody Scott Matney on March 21, more than two decades after the homicide.

On Monday, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) revealed that fresh details in the case have led to charges against Harvilla, resulting in an indictment.

  • First-degree murder
  • First-degree murder in perpetration of kidnapping
  • Especially aggravated kidnapping
  • Tampering with evidence
  • Abuse of corpse
  • False report (two counts)

Currently, Harvilla is detained at the Sullivan County Jail with a bond set at $1 million. If he manages to post bail, he will be required to wear an ankle monitor, according to the TBI.

Matney was reportedly last seen at a business along West State Street in Bristol in April 2002.
