Dangerous nitric acid leak at Ohio explosives plant prompts no-fly zone, mass evacuations

An enormous leak of nitric acid sent orange clouds billowing into the sky, leading to a no-fly zone and widespread evacuations near an Ohio chemical facility, as per reports.

The chemical incident involved 3,000 gallons of nitric acid leaking from a tank at the Austin Powder Red Diamond Plant in McArthur, a site that produces explosives for mining and construction. This occurred around 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday, according to a Vinton County representative who spoke to WLWT.

The spill from the 5,000-gallon tank resulted in road closures nearby, prompting the Federal Administration Authority to impose a temporary flight ban.

Photos of the incident showed eerie orange, brown-colored smoke billowing in the clear blue morning air.

No injuries were reported.

The cause of the leak is unknown.
