URBANA, Ill. (WCIA) — The Urbana Police Department is offering guidance to help community members identify legitimate police officers.
This follows a tragic incident where two Minnesota state legislators and their partners were shot at their residences early on a Saturday morning. Former Democratic House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her spouse lost their lives at their home, while Democratic Senator John Hoffman and his wife sustained injuries just a short distance away.
“While Urbana currently faces no known threats, we feel it is crucial for residents to recognize an authentic Urbana Police officer,” noted the Urbana Police Department in a Facebook post.
The department emphasized that their officers don official uniforms adorned with Urbana patches and badges. Additionally, officers’ shirts will prominently display a name tag. Even during inclement weather, the police officers will be clearly identifiable, assured the department.
All vehicles are also clearly marked, or can be verified through the dispatch center. Look for Urbana decals, and check out the license plate if you are unsure.
Caps may vary slightly, the police department said. Some police officers may wear uniform caps, others may wear a plain cap, and some may not wear a hat, the police department said.
If you are ever unsure whether someone is a legitimate police officer, you have the right to ask them for ID, or call 217-384-2320 to confirm.
