FORT MYERS, Fla. – A small aircraft made an emergency landing on a Fort Myers road Saturday, colliding with the rear of a pickup truck and prompting a response from sheriff’s deputies, firefighters and transportation officials. No injuries were reported.
The incident occurred shortly before noon near Bayshore Road and Interstate 75. The plane was carrying two pilots when a mechanical problem forced them to attempt an emergency landing. As the aircraft came down, it struck the back of a pickup traveling east on Bayshore Road. The pilots and the truck’s occupants were not hurt.
FAA Leads Investigation Into Emergency Landing
The Federal Aviation Administration has assumed responsibility for the investigation. Officials have not yet identified the mechanical failure that led to the emergency landing.
Lee County Sheriff Carmine Marceno commended the first responders who handled the scene.
“Thankfully, this incident had a positive outcome, and no one was injured,” Marceno said. “Given the recent tragic news involving aviation accidents, we are especially grateful that everyone is safe. I want to recognize and thank our patrol deputies, FDOT Southwest Florida, and Bayshore Fire Rescue for their quick response and professionalism in assessing the scene.”
Marceno said his office will continue assisting the FAA as investigators work to determine exactly what caused the incident.
