ILLINOIS (WCIA) — The Illinois Department of Natural Resources is hoping “citizen scientists” will help them monitor turkey populations.

The IDNR is seeking volunteers to help with wild turkey brood surveys, which aid in monitoring population trends and reproductive outcomes. Throughout the summer, turkeys hatch, and by observing the young and adult females, biologists can gauge the survival rates of juvenile turkeys.

Biologists also observe male turkeys to assess the overall wild turkey count, the ratio of males to females, and to evaluate the survival rates of adult turkeys.

Citizen scientists participating are expected to report sightings of young turkeys, along with adult males and females, specifying the location and date of observation. Turkey sightings can be submitted via the IDNR’s website. If unable to access the online survey, individuals can request to receive a postcard for submission.

Over the past five years, the IDNR has noted:

  • Increased reproductive success
  • Improved young turkey survival
  • Higher nesting success
  • The male-to-female ratio suggested consistent male carryover from spring hunting seasons and stable winter survival

IDNR said the results show positive indicators for the health of Illinois’ wild turkey population. And, that it is important they continue the survey. To find out more, email the IDNR at DNR.Turkey@illinois.gov.
