Trump calls for special prosecutor to investigate 2020 election

President Trump on Friday called for a special prosecutor to be appointed over unfounded claims that the 2020 election results were fraudulent.

Trump posted on Truth Social that he had all but eliminated illegal border crossings, compared to tens of thousands of migrants who came into the country each month under the Biden administration.

“Biden was grossly incompetent, and the 2020 election was a total FRAUD! The evidence is MASSIVE and OVERWHELMING,” Trump posted. “A Special Prosecutor must be appointed. This cannot be allowed to happen again in the United States of America! Let the work begin!”

Trump lost the 2020 election to former President Biden. There is no evidence of widespread fraud in the 2020 election, despite years of claims from Trump and some of his allies.

Numerous lawsuits brought after the 2020 election by Trump’s allies were dismissed by courts, including by judges appointed by GOP presidents. States like Georgia conducted audits of their 2020 results and found no evidence of fraud that would have altered the outcome.

Trump spent the weeks after the 2020 election pressing claims of widespread fraud, culminating in the Jan. 6, 2021 attack on the Capitol while lawmakers were certifying Biden’s victory.

Trump was indicted in 2023 by a Washington grand jury on charges stemming from his efforts to remain in power after losing the 2020 election. Those charges were later dropped after he won the 2024 election.
