CHICAGO (WLS) — A 36-year-old man was shot Friday night in River North, Chicago police said.

Around 7:05 p.m., a man on the sidewalk in the 400-block of North Wells Street got into a physical fight with an unidentified male suspect, according to the police.

The suspect pulled out a gun and fired shots at the man, police said. The man was shot in the left arm.

He was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in good condition, CPD said.

No one is in custody. Area Three detectives are investigating.

“It’s really unfortunate that incidents like this occur in River North,” Jacob Raphaeli commented. “One individual got into another’s face. The other person drew a gun, fired it, and we witnessed the entire event unfold. The victim took off running while the other individual casually walked away.”

It was not immediately clear what led up to the altercation.

Chicago police officers were seen going inside of the Lou Malnati’s located at 439 N. Wells St.

“My nieces and nephews are here visiting from Texas. We were enjoying a quiet meal, and then suddenly, there was a loud bang,” described Andrew Kim, a diner at Lou Malnati’s.

Witnesses said the man shot may have run into the pizzeria to seek out help.

“There was blood, basically, dripping from the entrance point,” said Brendan Treacy, a diner visiting from Boston.

Restaurant staff quickly stepped in to help with a towel, witnesses said.

“Definitely did all that they can do to help him out. I saw they were trying to tie it tight, cut off circulation, keep the arm up so it wasn’t excess bleeding,” Treacy said. “They did a good job, kind of, keeping everything under control, keeping everyone in the restaurant pretty calm.”

The shooting took place in a busy area, full of bars and restaurants on a warm Friday night: the first day of summer.

Crime tape was blocking off the area after the incident.

“I love this city. It’s such a beautiful, amazing city, and I don’t want to see it like this,” Raphaeli said.
