Storm Team 3: Summer's heating up... here's what to expect this week

With the first official weekend of summer upon us, prepare for quintessential summer weather. Afternoon temperatures will be in the low 90s, and heat indices may reach, or exceed, the triple digits today and again on Sunday. High pressure approaching from the north will bring Gulf moisture to the area, offering a slight chance of an isolated shower or thunderstorm. These will be sporadic, so you might be fortunate to encounter one!

As we look to Monday, a “high pressure sandwich” will form. With high pressure gaining strength from both the north and east, a forming “heat dome” will take control of the region. Expect ample sunshine, dry conditions, and climbing temperatures throughout the week. By late in the week, temperatures are expected to escalate into the upper 90s, with heat indices possibly reaching 110°. It’s probable that the first heat advisories of the season will be issued.

As we continue to trend warmer and warmer, don’t forget the essentials:

  • Stay hydrated and seek shade when possible
  • Wear light-colored, breathable clothing
  • Take breaks from outdoor activities
  • Know the signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke
  • Never leave children or pets in hot vehicles
  • Never walk pets during the heat of the day where their paws could burn

Stay safe, stay cool, and enjoy the summer sunshine responsibly!
