Mentions of io, a hardware startup co-founded by Apple’s renowned designer Jony Ive, have been removed from OpenAI’s website and social media. This unexpected update comes shortly after OpenAI announced its nearly $6.5 billion acquisition with plans to develop its own AI-focused hardware.

OpenAI explained to The Verge that the acquisition is still on course, but mentions were removed due to a trademark lawsuit from Iyo, a hearing device company that originated from Google’s innovation lab.

The availability of the announcement blog post and a nine-minute video featuring Ive and OpenAI’s CEO Sam Altman have been withdrawn. Initially, the blog post by Ive and Altman stated, “The io team, dedicated to creating products that inspire, empower, and enable, will join OpenAI to collaborate more closely with research, engineering, and product teams in San Francisco.”

OpenAI spokesperson Kayla Wood:

This page is temporarily down due to a court order following a trademark complaint from iyO about our use of the name ‘io.’ We don’t agree with the complaint and are reviewing our options.
