The Supreme Court decided on Monday that the Trump administration is permitted to continue deporting migrants to nations other than their country of origin with minimal notification.
In a 6–3 decision that mirrored ideological divisions, the justices suspended a late May decision by a Boston federal judge that had temporarily halted the prompt deportation initiative.
The conservative majority did not present an explanation for their decision; however, liberal Justice Sonia Sotomayor wrote a sharply critical dissent, joined by fellow liberals Elena Kagan and Ketanji Brown Jackson.
“In matters of life and death, it is best to proceed with caution,” Sotomayor wrote. “In this case, the Government took the opposite approach.”
“This Court now intervenes to grant the Government emergency relief from an order it has repeatedly defied. I cannot join so gross an abuse of the Court’s equitable discretion.”
