BLUFFTON, SC. () — The University of South Carolina Beaufort revealed plans on Thursday to construct a new basketball arena, complete with parking and additional sports fields.

The Sand Shark 20/20 Project aims to include a baseball field, a softball field, areas for track and field events, as well as a future pedestrian bridge and hotel, among other amenities.

The university also plans to use the new arena for other events like concerts and graduation.

Justin Rice, the Chairman of the Board for the USCB Education Foundation estimated the project will cost between $100 to $135 million.

The funding is planned to come entirely from both the state of South Carolina plus Beaufort and Jasper County.

“USCB offers a great deal, but it’s lacking in certain areas,” Rice mentioned. “We need sports entertainment and an arena to draw more students to our campus.”

USCB Athletic Director Quin Monahan said the project is aiming to reach beyond student-athletes.

“This is gonna be a community project,” he said. “We can get over 4,000 members of our community in one location in the Lowcountry of South Carolina, nothing could be better.”
