Margaret Garnett serves as a Judge for the United States District Court in the Southern District of New York (SDNY). President Joe Biden, from the Democratic Party, nominated her on July 11, 2023, filling the vacancy left by Vincent Louis Briccetti. Her confirmation by the Senate occurred on November 28, 2023, and she officially took office on January 9, 2024.

Garnett graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Notre Dame in 1992. She furthered her studies at Yale University, obtaining a Master of Arts in 1995 and a Master of Philosophy in 1997. Later, she earned her Juris Doctor from Columbia University School of Law in 2000.

Garnett began her public service career at the Southern District: in the course of a dozen years, she rose to be chief of criminal appeals before moving to the New York attorney general’s office in 2017. In 2018, then-mayor Bill de Blasio appointed her as commissioner of New York City’s Department of Investigation.

In 2021, as her term heading the city’s anti-corruption agency was ending, newly appointed U.S. Attorney Damian Williams asked her to return to the federal prosecutor’s office as the deputy for the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York.

Garnett received the Justice Department’s Director’s Award for Superior Performance, as well as the 2016 Stimson Medal, an honor the New York City Bar Association bestows on four outstanding assistant U.S. attorneys in the Southern and Eastern Districts of New York each year.
