Lightning: Myths & Truth

() — Lightning is the main hazard in any thunderstorm and there are several myths associated with the phenomena.

The bolts can reach temperatures up to five times hotter than the surface of the sun, while delivering an intense stroke of electricity.

There does not have to be a storm directly overhead to produce a cloud-to-ground lightning strike. Lightning can reach over 15 miles from a storm.

The only guaranteed safe spots are inside a sturdy building or a vehicle with a hard top and doors. Not all spots are safe in a home.

Stay away from any plumbing or exposed electrical wiring.

Being under a tree during a thunderstorm is dangerous and it is recommended to go indoors immediately.

The usual recommendation is to head inside when you hear thunder rumbling. Stay indoors for 30 minutes following the final lightning flash or thunder sound before going back outside for any activities.
