PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Early on Sunday, an explosion on Philadelphia’s north side claimed one life and injured two others, as reported by officials. The blast also inflicted serious damage on several homes in the area.

Firefighters responded to a report of an explosion just before 5 a.m., according to the Philadelphia Fire Department.

Daniel McCarty, the executive officer of the department, stated that around five homes suffered significant destruction, with some structures collapsing. Among the individuals affected, one person passed away. The two survivors, who were rescued, have been hospitalized; one is in stable condition, while the other remains in critical condition.

Crews were expected to continue search and rescue operations.

“The primary concern now is ensuring the stability of the nearby homes to prevent the hazard from escalating,” McCarty said. “The Philadelphia Fire Department has embarked on what will be a comprehensive, all-day effort to address the situation.”

Authorities had not determined the cause of the explosion.
