Oliver Gibson, former NFL defensive lineman, dead at 53

Former NFL defensive tackle Oliver Gibson has died at the age of 53, his family and Notre Dame announced on Tuesday. 

No cause of death has been reported yet.

Gibson was selected by the Steelers in the fourth round of the 1995 NFL Draft from Notre Dame, playing four seasons in Pittsburgh before joining the Bengals.

He played five seasons in Cincinnati before retiring from the league after the 2003 season. 

Over his nine-year NFL career, Gibson recorded 243 tackles, 17.5 sacks and 37 tackles for loss with one interception and two fumble recoveries.

After his playing days, Gibson got into coaching, becoming the head football coach at his alma mater, Romeoville High School in Illinois in 2014.

He was also an assistant basketball coach for the high school.

Gibson’s college alma mater also shared words after his death. 

“We are deeply saddened by the passing of Oliver Gibson. We send our condolences to his family and friends,” Notre Dame wrote in a statement on Monday.

Gibson’s former teammate Chad “Ochocinco” Johnson took to social media to mourn his passing.
