President Trump sharply criticized Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD) after the congressman confessed to knowing little about the ‘no tax on tips’ element in the “big, beautiful bill.”
Raskin’s confession is a sign that his knowledge of the bill is limited, making his objection to it willful ignorance.
During a conversation with CNN’s Kasie Hunt on Tuesday, the Maryland Democrat was questioned about his stance on the highly popular provision. To Hunt’s astonishment, Raskin appeared surprised that it was included in the bill.
“You know, I haven’t looked seriously at it because I haven’t thought they were serious about it,” he replied.
In an attempt to clarify his position, the congressman remarked that tips are a form of income and should fall under a “much more progressive income tax,” although he added that he isn’t completely against the idea of exempting them from taxes.
He downplayed the provision as a “symbolic consolation prize” even as a remarkable 83 percent of hourly workers support the measure.
CNN: Do you support no taxes on tips?
Jamie Raskin: Uh, I don’t know. I haven’t looked at it. pic.twitter.com/zeIwG5RXyZ
